I Love This Book!

Daughter of Smoke and Bone (Daughter of Smoke and Bone, #1)Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

Genre: Young Adult/Fantasy
Around the world, black hand prints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.
In a dark and dusty shop, a devil's supply of human teeth grows dangerously low.
And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherwordly war.
Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real; she's prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands"; she speaks many languages—not all of them human; and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she's about to find out.
When one of the strangers—beautiful, haunted Akiva—fixes his fire-colored eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?

 My rating:

One of the best books I've ever read! I am so dying to read the next book I can hardly contain myself. I miss Karou and Akiva, Zuzanna and Izîl already! They are my favorite characters.

Check out my links and updates here:

page 256 At this point Akiva knows who Karou is but he couldn't convey what he knew about her because if his step-brother and sister found out they wouldn't understand . They were on the bridge. Onlookers and bypassers stood gawking at the angel spectacle, Karou and Akiva.

by AngelLeila
Akiva: When he saw the chimaera girl again, he would be able to tell her that he had not used the life she had given him to kill any more of her kindred.
Akiva: "Your soul sings to mine. My soul is yours, and it always will be, in any world. No matter what happens " "I need you to remember that I love you."

She is Madrigal Kirin, who dared imagine a new way of living.

Karou: It was what she had always wanted and thought that she'd found: someone who was for her, as she was for him, whose blood and butterflies sang to hers and answered them, note for note.

A New Holiday

I’d like to invent a reading holiday where all's you do is pick a book to read and quote it, talk about it, share it wherever you like. Let the world know about READABOOKDAY!

I’m reading DarkFever by Karen Marie Moning
MacKayla is young and naive who goes in search of her sisters murderer. She travels to Ireland , Dublin. There she starts seeing Fae monsters and with the impervious brute Jericho Barron , she gets herself involved in an incomprehensive mystery way over her head; something her sister had said before she died about “Shi-sadu”. I’m only on chapter nine but so far I don’t like Jericho for physically attacking MacKayla.

“My philosophy is pretty simple-any day nobody’s trying to kill me is a good day in my book. I haven’t had many good days lately.”
This post was inspired by Plinky Prompts: Invent a holiday! Explain how and why everyone should celebrate.

Holy Quantum Theory!

Jenny Plague-Bringer by J.L. Bryan

My rating: 5 of 5 skulls

Genre: New Adult/horror

Seth and Jenny are happily living in Paris up until she begins telling stories about her recent past incarnation. At first I was disappointed. why? because there is no such thing as reincarnation! lol J/K
I found it all a bit confusing and uncomfortable. Like Seth, I wasn't interested nor did I want to be bothered with their past lives. I wanted to stay  in Paris!:(

Jenny took us back to the Great Depression of 1933 where she was working in a sideshow Carnival as the Worlds Most Diseased Woman. Tis quite fitting but idk I loathe reading about carnivals though. Her name was Juliana Blight. She had problems with everyone touching her then too, except when she meets Sebastian, a boy who could heal people.

Ward Kilpatrick is a bully with his own powers that allows him to see into peoples minds. I don't know why he is looking to gather all the paranormals into one place, maybe because he likes to control people or he wants power and money, nevertheless he is very persuasive and determined to find Tommy and his opposite Esmeralda as well as Jenny and Seth. He acts like some big wig from the CIA but actually he's from some stupid agency called ASTRIA that doesn't even exist.

Before we get to Jenny's quantum theory in the Great Depression (lol cause it kinda felt that way to me :p ) Jenny finds out she is pregnant and believes the baby wouldn't survive because of her pox. She killed her mother so therefore logically her baby would not be immune to it either. There was somebody ringing the doorbell named Mariella, looking for a boy she said she saw his future, and it was very urgent that she found him. O Jeezus! Of all the things Jenny needs ; more drama! She feels a little jealous because she is gorgeous, but instead of telling her Seth indeed lived here, she lies to Mariella and waits for her to leave. I don't blame her for being jealous but I wanted Jenny to trust her because she is a very nice person and Jenny didn't have any friends. I am happy to report they do become friends. Mariella is a paranormal too. She's the Oracle.

I enjoyed Christmas with Jenny, Seth and Mariella but it was over much too quick. Seth to Mariela:
“You could come here if you want. Jenny’s making some French dish with a duck. Then I’m going to heal the duck back to life and let it fly around our apartment.”
Jenny teaches Mariella how to get in touch with her past life and offers to get some magic mushrooms to help with the mind altering aspect. Jenny could not do them cuz she was pregnant and good for her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Next thing I remember, they were down on some beach getting high on magic mushrooms bringing up memories of their past lives when suddenly they are attacked and kidnapped by Ward and his goons. They wake up in a cell somewhere in Germany.

Meanwhile in the other life.....

Julianna gets an invitation from Jonathan Barrett, Seth’s great-grandfather and a past incarnation of Alexander from the third book, Alexander Death, to join him. Sebastian accepts the invitation and they both are back to the future to Fallen Oak! They also travel to Berlin on a cruise ship where they meet Hitlers Ghost apparently lol

Summary:

Jenny Morton does find the peace she is looking for with a little help from her friends. But having said too much already I'm not going to spoil everything.

I loved it, I thought it was amazing . J.L Bryan's Paranormals is an absolute masterpiece!

Half-Bloods aren't so bad

Half-Blood (Covenant, #1)Half-Blood by Jennifer L. Armentrout

I don't get what the flower reference in the cover is about. I might've missed something. It's been awhile a few days since I finished this book but I will try to remember it.

Alex Andros is quite the kickass fighter with special powers because she is a half-blood.

There is a god who she has a big crush on, Aiden, and he's a pure blood. Hematoi's descend from the unions of gods and mortals. It is forbidden for them to be together as a rule, because the gods said so, but we don't see or hear them. As is usual they always get a bad rap lol

Lexie aka Alex expected to be reprimanded for her 3 year absence but is allowed back into the Covenant. Her stepfather Lucian is now a high political figure but she has no feelings for him.

Her mother, Rachelle, had taken Lexie and left everything behind because of something the oracle said about her daughter being the Apollyon when she turns 17. I don't know why that would be a bad thing either.

Aiden offers to train her in defensive combat against the Daimons. When Lexie finds out through a series of events that her mother is alive and is a Daimon, she has to stop her mother from killing others so she makes it her job to kill her. It's pretty sad and brave and unheard of to have to kill your own mother and she fails the first time. Rachelle kidnaps her and takes her back to Miami instead.

Daimon: A Half-Blood Prequel

Daimon: A Prequel to Half-Blood (Covenant #0.5) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

You can download it for FREE.

For three years, Alexandria has lived among mortals—pretending to be like them and trying to forget the duty she'd been trained to fulfill as a child of a mortal and a demigod. At seventeen, she's pretty much accepted that she's a freak by mortal standards… and that she'll never be prepared for that duty.
According to her mother, that’s a good thing. But as every descendant of the gods knows, Fate has a way of rearing her ugly head. A horrifying attack forces Alex to flee Miami and try to find her way back to the very place her mother had warned her she should never return—the Covenant. Every step that brings her closer to safety is one more step toward death… because she's being hunted by the very creatures she'd once trained to kill.
The daimons have found her.

The order in which to read her books:

  1. Daimon: A Prequel to Half-Blood
  2. Half-Blood: A Covenant Novel
  3. Pure: The Second Covenant Novel (April 2012)
  4. Deity: The Third Covenant Novel (November 2012)
  5. Elixir: A Covenant Novella (November 2012)
  6. Apollyon: The Fourth Covenant Novel (April 2013)
  7. Sentinel: The Fifth Covenant Novel (late 2013)

My Reflections:

Omg I gotta read this book series now!

After reading the prequel to Half-Blood by Jennifer Armentrout I want to read more! I love the concept of Alex being an immortal and the funny thing is she says "O gods" a lot.  She and her mother had left the Covenant and are in danger from the Daimons. Alexandria describes them as Death ; pure and simple. Only half-bloods can see their true form; ugly. They appear like any other normal human to others though. They feed on aether. Aether runs in immortal blood but they do not usually go after half bloods like Alex cuz there's not much in it .

When Alex sees her mother get the life sucked out of her , she ends up killing a daimon accidentally with a titanium garden spade. Titanium is like poison to them and it can kill them. Anyway running away was not something she was used to doing. The Covenant , taught her to fight with violence.

Now the Daimons are after her and she fights desperately to get back to the Covenant where she belongs but the problem is..... her mother is dead and all she has is a warning to never return to the Covenant, but she doesn't know why, and a few hundred dollars ...until Aiden shows up to bring her home... ahhhhh *her hero *sigh

A Review of The Necromancer

The Necromancer

The Necromancer by Pamela.M. Richter

Genre: Paranormal
Amazon Kindle

Goodreads Review:

Michelle was brutally attacked in her locked hotel room in Las Vegas. The police didn't believe her and thought she must have lured a man up to her hotel room for a little sexual adventure, which went dangerously out of control.
Michelle sustained visible scars from the terrifying and almost lethal attack, but pure fear motivated the move from her home in California to Hawaii. She's scared her attacker will come back. She's sure the next time he'll kill her. Now she has a successful career and she figures abstinence is an acceptable, if lonely, way to live.
Michelle decides that an affair with a wickedly handsome man who moves into her building might cure her of the humiliating, embarrassing, and uncontrollable anxiety attacks which plague her whenever she finds herself alone with a man.
How could she know that she made the worst possible choice? Omar Satinov, the man Michelle has chosen, is a secret, whispered legend across several continents. His lure is a mystical religion based upon Witchcraft; his hook, the addictive herbal products he sells his followers. But does he really have supernatural powers, as many of his disciples believe?

My rating: 4 of 5 skulls

My Reflections

The story gives a lot of background information about Witchcraft which I kind of found interesting. I mean I guess it needed to be said but what the author intended certainly superceded its unrealistic paranormal vibe. After all Wicca is considered a religion and rape is a serious crime. Those facts alone are what make this story kinda scary.

Were it not for this book I would've never known, for example, that the religion of witchcraft has over 200,000 adherents in the United States, alone. There are five times as many witches as there are Quakers; more witches than there are Unitarians or Buddhists. There are at least 5,000 covens in the United States AND to the witches, God was both male and female, father and mother of all things. A strict 'witch's ethic' forbade Wiccans from accepting money for training or initiating anyone into their religion. They also view sex as a sacrament.

Michelle didn't know what she was getting into when she chooses to have an affair with Omar the Necromancer. He IS the bane of her existence as her rapist, but she didn't know that. Her memories were wiped clean among other things when she was raped by his pet human, Samson. Omar had another pet; Lucifer the adorable kitten whom he used to perform magical services.
"This is a special cat. Omar's cat." Heather sighed. "A bewitched cat who eats human organs."

I fell in love with this cute kitten nevermind Rod Nakamura! lol

Omar wanted Michelle to be a High Priestess but she needed to be tested by blood, water and fire . All that did was make Michelle stronger in her supernatural abilites. She had a gift of healing and was sorta psychic. The battle between Omar and Michelle on the beach was fun and extraordinary. I really enjoyed that part. It wasn't your normal physical fight but more of the mind. I love the ocean! when Vincent and Michelle were swimming and fighting for their lives. It was exhilirating and exciting. Overall this is a great book and I recommend it to the adventuresome.

Omar's Pet Kitten

Omar's adorable kitten Lucifer...... so fluffy and cute. Omar is The Necromancer and he uses his pet to 'perform magical services' kill people. I'm only 48% done but the kitten stole my heart. Suzanne was explaining to Vincent what happened in her interview with Omar when he made her a Witch and the kitten was there!

The students of Green Lane Academy roam their halls unaware that below their manicured campus exists a prestigious school of an entirely different kind . . .

Sixteen-year-old Phoebe Pope has enrolled at the Campus Below: a spy academy for shape-shifters hidden deep beneath the grounds of a boarding school whose humans unknowingly protect it. There, thanks to a carefully planned schedule, she leads a double life: spy trainee Below and normal teenager Above.

As if two course loads, concealing a secret power she alone wields, and coping with her father’s recent death weren’t enough, Phoebe finds herself developing major feelings for actor and teen heartthrob Colten Chase, who attends the Campus Above and appears to be majoring in winning Phoebe’s heart. But when officials learn that Phoebe may be at the center of a startling prophecy, she becomes the target of shape-shifting assassins who will stop at nothing to suppress the truth.

Now Phoebe’s lessons about Shaper’s enemies and spycraft take on great importance as a menace stalks the campus, with Phoebe as its target. Meanwhile, what began as an unlikely relationship with Colten, quickly morphs into heartache when she suspects that something sinister lurks beneath this movie star’s glitter and fame. Suddenly, Phoebe’s caught in a mesh of lies, betrayals, and danger where she doesn’t know who to trust, and needs to rely on herself–and her secret power—to get to the truth and to stay alive.

If you are into Zombies, and you've read Zombies Don't Cry by Rusty Fischer then I recommend Detention of the Living Dead

Detention of the Living DeadMaxine “Max” Compton is in detention when the outbreak starts; so are several other students when Max’s best friend Brie storms in – chomping on the thigh bone of their favorite Home Ec teacher, Ms. Watkins!

Brie is a zombie, and quickly starts biting everyone in the room—even her best friend, Max!
When the class realizes what happens, it’s too late; they are all zombies—and they’re no longer alone.

Now a thin gray man in a white lab coat is testing them; making them read, and once they can no longer read, the zombies are led from the room, never to be seen again.

One by one the zombies stop reading, all but a few of them, Max included. Oh, and that cute thug she’s been crushing on for years, Zander Cash!

That’s when Max learns that there are good zombies, and bad zombies. And if she’s to survive, she has to pick a side.

Who knew Detention could be this hard… or last forever?

1. Charade begins with Heven cutting off a lot of the hair she used to hide behind. Her haircut turns out really good. Have you ever had a bad haircut? A bad dye job? Tell us about it.
Some Like It Paranormal2. What do you think about Heven and Cole’s relationship?

4. There are a lot of demons running around in Charade. What do you think would be the best weapon to fight them?
5. Sam is very close with his brother and feels responsible for him. Do you have any siblings? What is your relationship with them like?

Week One Answers
1. UGH! I hate hairdressers for that reason! They ruined my hair! I've only found one hairdresser out of a ton of them who can actually cut my hair the way I want. It is hard to find a hairdresser who knows what a long shag is. It's inexcusable I say. I also got a perm when I was 14 and it ruined my hair. I had beautiful soft curly hair and I loved my hair! so it was a tragic mistake to get a perm.
2. It is a mistake. It turned her best friend Kimber into an enemy .
3. I think she's a well trained fighter. I think she's some kind of angel .
4. Uhm with Fire? idk really . It's hard to kill a demon.
5. I am the youngest of 6 and am on my own. We aren't close.

Week 2 Questions

Chapters 7-13
November 12th - hosted by Christy @ Love of Books

1. Heven’s mom has a new boyfriend that Heven doesn’t really like. Have you ever disliked a boyfriend/girlfriend of family member’s significant other? Did you tell them or just try to get along?
Cambria Hebert2. Kimber is acting weird… weirder than usual. Any predictions? Have you ever known anyone like Kimber?
3. Heven is getting a new “supernatural” power. If you could have one which would you choose?
4. In this set of chapters we find out something about Cole. Were you surprised?
5. Heven has someone invading her dreams. What is the scariest or wackiest dream you have ever had?

Week 2 Answers
1. Yes . Frankly . It doesn't really matter what I think though. As long as they are happy but I've told them what I thought of them , yes. Mostly that I hated and disliked them , and so have they about my boyfriends.
2 Kimber is jealous and we all know that and she probably is vindictive and wants to hurt Heven, but no I haven't  known anyone like her.
3 I wish I could speak many languages and teleport
4 I was not surprised they were siblings. It made the story more interesting and it made sense because they both knew something was different of the other.
5. I've had those dreams where I can't wake up. There's a name for it but I can't remember. It scares the hell out of me because I desperately try, I scream but nothing comes out.

Questions for Week 3

November 19th - Hosted by Heidi @ Rainy Day Ramblings
Chapters 14-20

Cambria Hebert1. In these chapters the characters go to Italy. Where is one place you would like to travel that you haven’t been?
2. Where is your favorite place that you have traveled to?
3. Kimber betrays Heven in these chapters. Do you think that Heven should get even or just write Kimber off? What would you do?
4. Gemma and Cole seem to be attracted to each other but don’t really want to admit it. Have you ever had a crush you never told anyone about?
5. Who is your favorite character in this series so far and why?

Week 3 Answers

1.Australia
2. Spain
3. Punch her in the face and tell her "Cole is my brother !" No but seriously it's kind of hard to write someone off when you are rooming with them and Kimber is being so nasty.
4. Ya what's up with Gemma and Cole anyway? I have never had a crush that I kept secret. Why? It's nobody else's business anyway and why would they care?
5. Sam because he is loyal to family and he cares about people.

Questions for Week Four

November 26th:
Veronica@Mostly Reviews
Chapters 20-24

 1. Did you have a favorite part in this book?
 2. The characters travel to hell in hopes to get the scroll back. I would say hell is the worst place they have ever been. Where is the WORST place you have ever been?
 3. Heven steps in front of a chain to protect Sam and is injured. She will be scarred again. Do you think she will act the same way as before or do you think that she is a different person now?
 4. We now know why Logan was acting so odd. How do you think he will be now that the demon is gone? 5. Any predictions for the next book in the series, Tirade?

Book Blogger Confessions -#20 Scary books!

Book Blogger Confessions is a meme that posts the 1st and 3rd Monday of every month, where book bloggers "confess" and vent about topics that are unique to us. Feel free to share, vent and offer solutions. The question that is asked this week is....
"Do you like to read scary books? Why or why not? If so, what is the scariest book you ever read and why does it deserve that honor?"
I avoid them at all cost. I don't like being scared . I'm not a big fan of evil and horror but I like murder mysteries by Jo Nesbo or Jeremy Bates. Those books don't seem to bother me ...much, but even in the Mortal Instrument series, which I love, there are some scary parts.

Reading requires a certain amount of imagination so when something manages to infuse that fear in me, I can pretend it sorta just didn't happen yano? Unlike movies, where you can see those horrible images on screen. I DO NOT LIKE BEING SCARED in any way, shape or form, [so don't even think about it or I will punch you in the face.] You have been warned, when I get scared I get angry *shakes fist in the air*

For example: When the warlock, Magnus Bane was preparing to bring up a demon for the first time, I cringed. That shit scared me!! especially when I'm reading in bed at night all alone?! Certain parts can be scary like that but honestly? I've never read a scary novel. It's not my cup a tea.
"Bonus question! Just for fun – have you ever dressed as a literary character for Halloween? Brave enough to show a photo if you have one?"
No I have not.

Can love transcend even death?

The Fates made a mistake and Michael Talbot wasn't supposed to have survived the car accident that killed his two best friends. One side of his skull was pretty much smashed in, leaving him with an 'all-seeing-eye' but he survived and that needed to be fixed according to 'The Voice'. Michael can see things that are dark and unpleasant. He can see auras and was sort of psychic.

Nobody liked him after the accident and his mom treats him as if he were dead and invisible. Could they not see him? I have no idea.

Michael laments because his life is a living hell, better off dead, until he met Jandilynn Hollow. I agree with her mother in that I don't know what she saw in him but unlike her mother, I don't think Mike is a bad person or evil only I do think he died.

When Michael moves into a new house mysterious and strange things happen; like his fridge goes poltergeist on him, and someone is leaving messages on it in blood!!! and his Cat!!

“Michael Talbot yet lives, Mr. Black,” Simon Peter said to the dark entity before him. Mr. Black produced a large dark ledger from his robes. He spent a moment shifting through the voluminous pages. “Ah, here it is. That is impossible. I collected him on October 11th at 3: 33 am. I can most assuredly tell you he is where he should be.” Simon Peter swept his arm, a vision of a small ranch home came into view, more importantly the lone figure sitting on the couch reading the Bible. *** Mike looked around when he felt he was no longer alone. *** Simon Peter swept his arm back and the image was gone. “Fix it.” Mr. Black, his face expressionless, gave a small bow and left. Every Family Has Its Demons

Director Tim Burton brings the cult classic series “Dark Shadows” to the big screen in a film featuring an all-star cast, led by Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer and Helena Bonham Carter.

In the year 1750, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool England to start a new life in America, where they build a fishing empire in the coastal Maine town that comes to carry their name: Collinsport.

Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of falling in love with a beauty named Josette DuPres (Bella Heathcote) and breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green).
A witch in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death—turning him into a vampire, and then burying him…alive.

Nearly two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972, a stranger in an even stranger time. Returning to Collinwood Manor, he finds that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin, and the dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Family matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) is the one person Barnabas entrusts with the truth of his identity. But his rather odd and anachronistic behavior immediately raises the suspicions of the live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman As Barnabas sets out to restore his family name to its former glory, one thing stands in his way: Collinsport’s leading denizen, who goes by the name Angie…and who bears a striking resemblance to a very old acquaintance of Barnabas Collins.

Also residing in Collinwood Manor are Elizabeth’s ne’er-do-well brother, Roger Collins, (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter Carolyn Stoddard (Chloë Grace Moretz); and Roger’s precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gully McGrath). The longsuffering caretaker of Collinwood is Willie Loomis (Jackie Earle Haley), and new to the Collins’ employ is David’s nanny, Victoria Winters (Bella Heathcote), who is, mysteriously, the mirror image of Barnabas’ one true love, Josette.

A Note From Alice

She won’t rest until she’s sent every walking corpse back to its grave. Forever. Had anyone told Alice Bell that her entire life would change course between one heartbeat and the next, she would have laughed. From blissful to tragic, innocent to ruined? Please. But that’s all it took. One heartbeat. A blink, a breath, a second, and everything she knew and loved was gone.
Her father was right. The monsters are real….
To avenge her family, Ali must learn to fight the undead. To survive, she must learn to trust the baddest of the bad boys, Cole Holland. But Cole has secrets of his own, and if Ali isn’t careful, those secrets might just prove to be more dangerous than the zombies….

The only thing I liked about this book was the cover and her pretty dress. I have to be honest and it is the gist of how I feel and I should have stopped reading after A Note From Alice because the rest is pure torture. I don't understand the rave reviews , in fact I guess I must've missed the part when Alice sent every walking corpse back to their grave. Oh wait....that's right!? it was Cole who did that!... what a jerk, or maybe it was just faith? Whatever it was; just how does forcing spirit out of body work anyways? what the hell is that called?! wtf!? I don't believe zombies have spirits for one thing and reading this book was like scratching my eyeballs with sandpaper
