Jackie Can Cooks OMG!

I am making something for Halloween tonite.
(click for recipe)

I had to buy those pots they call ramekins , just for the two of us . I always seem to screw it up though. This time I didn't have Sherry like the recipe asked (I've never cooked with it before) so I used the wine I had in the fridge . It's a little more purply than normal, lol but, oh well . I didn't have any black olives for the eyes and green olives just doesn't make it  look very good . I also thought I had some frozen peas like the recipe asks but I didn't ; the parsley kind of makes it look like peas though lol . I tasted it and it's still good.

I hope Phil is surprised when he gets home . He works on Sunday (wah) but gets off earlier around 4:30 pm.

There isn't enough room in my oven for two plates so I have to wait until one is finished cooking to take a snapshot of it . I never claimed to be a Susie Homemaker lol and I only put 4 tentacles on each one although I used a whole package of puff pastry . I'm hoping they will puff up. Does that look cooked to you? I might have to stick it back in the oven for a little while longer . Ugh it's making a mess and it's a far cry from Megans at NotMartha.org.

This is the other one .

See hers is more brown and un-... well... NOT messy lol wtf is wrong with my tentacles ? haha I couldn't separate the dough and I couldn't find the usual puff pastry that I get so maybe I should try the Pillsbury Crescent Seamless Dough Sheets next time idk.

The Grammar Nazi strikes again

Lol this is just wrong but it's so funny ..I'm so corny I know . I had to post it after the first one

and yes I did see this show and Brad Pitt still does a terrible job with his accents. Anyway....

Use these to ward off witches on Hallows eve.

Do I love these little red berries, who knew?

The seeds and their use have their origin 'way back when holly and evergreens bearing red berries were used to remind the Christians of the blood of Christ and the burning love of Mary for her Child.

On all hallows eve an old witch, riding a broomstick would flee in fright from the groups of guests, terrified at the sight of the berries. Barred from the house by these berries (some of which are combined with autumn leaves and fastened to the front door in a swag), she has to be content to hoot and screech, pop out from behind trees; and when the time comes, bade by what she knows is the truth, she gives directions for begging at the door.

"I am forced to tell ye this, miserable dearies, whether I would or not; so mark it well. If ye pray for the dead, they are released sooner from their torment of waiting in Purgatory and sped on the wings of light to their eternal reward. So go and knock and the woman will open to your knock, and sing as loud as ye can: 'A soul cake, a soul cake, a prayer for a soul cake!' She will bear on her arm a basket of cakes and tell ye for whom ye are to pray. And may ye all choke on every crumb and find praying and eating at one and the same time as miserable as the torment I endure forever riding hungry on my broomstick!"

You may be wondering if witches even exist let alone ride on broomsticks. The first king of Israel, Saul, sought the advice of the witch of Endor. Witches or Wizards were thought to possess esoteric knowledge and powers over the world. People believed they could fly, or change into an animal (animism was common among rural, backward people). The witch’s broomstick was interpreted to be a male object of life-giving power. Witches were thought to fly above the crops with a broomstick between their legs to “teach” the plants how to grow.

Short People

"Abraham Lincoln was a lot shorter than I thought he would be..."

Et Tu Brute? Some people think he's a monster, others idolize him I bet we think the devil is a monster too but in reality he is just a chihuahua. It's all an illusion and it doesn't surprise me.........c'mon allow me to remind you : The LORD exhalts the humble .

Lol This has been an edition of Saturday Centus . I hope you don't mind the bible quote .It just seemed to fit the Centus. I hear many of you complaining about the 50 words this week pffft . Some of you could have written one sentence and it still would have been a lot better than mine I'm sure . I'm so jealous :D

Anyway if only I could write like James Joyce or Margaret Atwood or Agatha Christie just one sentence ....... ahhhh forget it . I think I prefer them as short people too :p

More Trick R Treat

Listen to a selection from “The Halloween Schoolbus Massacre” from Trick ‘R Treat, composed by Douglas Pipes.

I've been waiting patiently to see this movie. After reading about it online I just had to get it . I was pretty sure Phil hadn't seen it yet .

We planned to watch it last week after we spent Sunday looking for the DVD.  We checked one retail movie outlet , to which the lady at the desk had to phone other outlets just to see if they had it, none of them did. bummer.  I hoped I didn't have to order it online because I knew it wouldn't get here in time for halloween and well that would just defeat the purpose for me. This is a halloween movie !! Oh the horror!

After walking through the mall , our feet were getting kinda sore and we were tired but I was determined to check out some other places because DAMMIT that is what we came to do ! So the bus took a little longer than we expected but just as soon as we got to our destination , there was a blockbusters and it never even dawned on me to check there. Blockbusters will soon be going out of business and you know something? I think it is still the best place to buy movies cause they have ALL the good movies and lo and behold... WE FOUND it ! Oh I was so happy !

Trick'r Treat the DVD was released Oct 6th 2009.

I feel like I've changed a bit when it comes to horror movies. I used to hate them with a passion, probably because I don't like being scared and certainly don't like the emotion and because fear is not from God, but the devil, so I never liked Halloween the movie; or the day itself .

Anyway, this is what the reviews say about it :
Always hand out treats on Halloween… or else.

Trick 'r Treat is a collection of creepy stories that mixes fun with fear, candy with poison, and laughter with screams.

In the tradition of Creepshow and Tales From the Crypt comes four interwoven tales set on Halloween night: a high-school principal who moonlights as a vicious serial killer, a young virgin whose quest for that special someone takes a gruesome turn, a group of teens who carry out a cruel prank with disastrous consequences, and a cantankerous old man who battles a mischievous trick-or-treating demon.
Every night this week has been foiled for one reason or another from watching this movie. It just hasn't happened yet lol . I could watch it anytime during the day but I want to watch it with Phil because I don't want to get scared , ha! it's a good excuse for waiting for halloween I guess . We may watch it tomorrow or we may wait for Sunday night but the things I've heard about it so far , are really good . Everyone seems to like it even more than Halloween

Watch out for the next Trick'r Treat cult when more people will be donning their Samhains and SamIam's and Samcakes, Sam halloween costumes and even Sam Pumpkins.

UPDATE: Well we watched Trick'r Treat last night and we didn't think it was as good as the reviews said it was . I hate that when that happens . It's all gossip. I know it's disappointing. We were disappointed. It is a cute movie but cute isn't scary or horror. There really wasn't anything scary about it .

On another note we ordered take out and the driver couldn't find our house cause IT WAS TOO HARD TO FIND! :/ honestly, if he doesn't know the city well enough he should probably look at a map. The lady was trying to tell us that we live in the S.E not the S.W grrr. I know where I live !~!

...When it did finally arrive the food was still hot but I might have missed some of the show trying to give directions to my address but oh well . I will probably watch it again anyway .

Halloween Food

Oops my fingers got in the way   ...

finger food
All you need is...:

- some frozen french fries
- some hot dogs, preferably the ones with skins or casing, but any type frankfurter will do. A bit harder to find, but they do sell the monster size Polish-sausage type red-hots. Italian sausage, kielbasa, chorizo, or bratwurst should also give the same effect.
- some frozen prepared buffalo-style chicken wings or fried chicken wings
- a bit of butcher's twine or cotton string or clean thread
- a bit of aluminum foil
- Optional: a can of vegetarian beans in tomato sauce or whatever variety/flavor if you want a full entree. A can of beans with that slab of pork fat works also.
- blood-like condiments, catsup, ketchup or tomatoe sauce

step 2-Manicure and Pedicure
Take a part of a frozen french fry. You can shape it like a fingernail or just find a small piece that is pointy on one end and blunt at the other. Cut a slit or pocket into the end of the hot dog where a fingernail would be.

Take the point of the knife and create a pilot hole to insert or stuff the french fry into the hot dog. Be careful not to bulge the hot dog too much so that you end up ripping the skin. Dig out some more meat if you need room to fit the french fry.

step 3-Diggity Dawg
Take a hot dog and break it in half. You want a ragged edge. You can also break it 1/3 of the way down. One part can be a toe and the other part can be a part of the finger.

To create a finger, wrap a small piece of aluminum foil around the hot dog. Tie a string around where the joints of the finger should be. The foil will ensure you do not cut into the hot dog and break the skin.

Compress the hot dog slightly as you tie the string. When it cooks, the hot dog will take a more natural shape and give you a ridge at the finger joint. We will cook the dog with the string on and cut them after they are cooked.

For hors' d'oeuvres, you can just bake them till heated through and browned in a toaster oven. You can also take a big pot and bring your batch of beans to a simmer. Gently place the "fingers and toes" into the pot and let them heat through with the beans. Baste with liquid and beans in the pot.

step 4-Got a bone to pick?
Cut off the strings and remove foil before serving. You can mash the french fry down to form a better fingernail shape.

The chicken wings should be frozen prepared kind where they require short cooking or just reheating. Have the chicken wings defrosted so you can work with them easier. Don't do this with fresh chicken parts unless you intend to fully cook them on the side or with the beans later.

It probably is best to just use the drummette portion of the wing, the one with a single bone.

After cooking, peel or rip off most of the meat surrounding the bone, just be sure to remove any signs of chicken skin. This will allow you to skewer or insert the bone into the end of the hot dog.

For the fingers, jam in a chicken bone in the ragged end of the hot dog.

step 5-Can someone please lend a hand?
Garnish with your blood-like condiments, Serve with a big helping of Muuuuuuhhahhahhahahhhahahh!

You can also bake with pastry dough strips wrapped around body parts and apply red sauce to look like bandages.

Or have fingers sticking out of your mom's pumpkin pie.

Hand pie, anybody?

Serve grilled with grill marks for those especially deviant. Enjoy!
