101 wednesday- "Brothers" of Jesus?

"Brothers" of Jesus? This one really gets me. Have the sola scriptura crowd ever thought that maybe, just perhaps, the word 'brother' was put in the bible because that is what everyone used to call each other back then? !! IT WAS FOR THAT VERY REASON! Seriously I urge you. At the time Jesus was on earth, the fullness of time, can you imagine 'brothers' or 'sisters' of Jesus being anything other than blood relatives?  It irks me that you can't see that THEY WEREN'T LITERAL BLOOD RELATIVES! Instead, you listen to the likes of  Dan Brown and you are taught that the Virgin Mary had other children! Or that Mary Magdalene was Jesus' wife!?! What a bunch of camel poo! God have mercy on you.

Mary had only Jesus, and if you believe she bore other children, it makes you as dumb as a heretic. For to commit heresy, one must refuse to be corrected. "For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own likings and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander into myths" (2 Tim. 4:3–4)

I ripped this image off from here
There was no sex life!  Oh, I know your futile arguments because you ignore the Traditions to install frills and human doctrines by ripping scriptures apart having forgotten who God is; by ignoring Mary.  Was there anyone else in the Bible that conceived of the Holy Spirit? No? Then tell me: Why are you so obsessed with her sex life? And why can't you give credit to where credit's due by calling her 'Blessed Mary '? In her Magnificat, she exclaims: "All generations will call me blessed." I guess the heretics are excluded then?

Traditional Christianity held that Jesus is Mary's only son. The references to Jesus' brothers refers to other family members, and in some cases to his disciples. Here has a closer look:

  • Mary wife of Cleopas and 'sister' of the Virgin Mary (Jn 19:25) is the mother of James and Joses (Mk 15:47; Mt 27:56) who are called the "brothers of Jesus" (Mk 6:3).
  • Acts 1:12-15 Apostles, Mary, some women and Jesus' brother's number about 120. That is a lot of brothers.
  • Gen 14:14 Lot, Abraham's nephew (Gen 11:26-28), described as Abraham's brother (KJV).
  • Gen 29:15 Laban, Jacob's uncle, calls Jacob his brother (KJV).
  • John 19:26-27 Jesus gives the care of Mary to John, not one of his brothers.
  • Zechariah 12:10 Predicts the Messiah will be an only child.

  1. Those scriptural references at the end are interesting - thanks! And I look forward to reading your link on heresy.
