Torture is a global reality even in the 21st century. Last year, the pictures from the Abu Ghraib military prison bore shocking witness to this fact, causing worldwide horror.

It is all the more alarming that recently there have been an increasing number of voices demanding to give the government, under certain exceptional circumstances, the right to threaten with torture or actually apply it.
