The Mage in Black Review (Sabina Kane #2)

The Mage in Black (Sabina Kane #2)
by Jaye Wells

The sequel to Red-Headed Stepchild from USA Today Bestselling author Jaye Wells... Sabina Kane doesn't have the best track record when it comes to family. After all, her own grandmother, the leader of the vampire race, just tried to kill her. When she arrives in New York to meet the mage side of her family, the reunion takes the fun out of dysfunctional. On top of that, the Hekate Council wants to use her as a pawn in the brewing war against the vampires. Her mission will take her into the bowels of New York's Black Light district, entangles her in mage politics, and challenges her beliefs about the race she was raised to distrust. And Sabina thought vampires were bloodthirsty.
Now that Sabina Kane agrees to follow Adam to New York to meet her twin Sister Maisie, she also learns a white Owl named Stryx is following her.

There were many times she had to fight off an attacker and The Mage in Black was more of an action adventure except Adam no sooner gets back home when he has to go away again. To say Sabina wasn't thrilled about that is an understatement because he was the only one she felt she could trust and the deal was that Adam would train her to use her magic/mage skills. It was also a bit of a disappointment without Adam in the picture. He doesn't appear again until the last battle at the end of the book.

Anyway somebody is relentless to kill her having attempted more than 5 times but when Sabina Kane is found guilty of murdering one of the Fae Queen's emmissaries Hawthorne Banathsheh, which honestly was in self defense because he was going to kill her, the Hekate council Orpheus has her locked up in prison. Maisie breaks her out of prison and Sabina seeks protection and safety with her ex-lover Slade who is called The Shade by everyone else. Slade is a vampire who runs a business in the shady darker side of the streets of New York.

Sabina meets up with Slade after she is found poaching on The Lone Wolves turf one night. Vampires are not allowed to feed without paying some sort of blood tax and she gets into a fight with the werewolves. Boy it always seems like she gets into some kind of trouble everywhere she turns. In order to settle this dispute The Shade decides the only way to stave off bad relations between the Weres and Vampires in that city is for Sabina Kane and the alpha of the Lone Werewolves Michael Romulus to duel it out in a fighting match. Eventually he proves to be a strong Ally.

Slade aka The Shade makes a lot of money from the Demon Fight Club. It also happens Giguhl the demon cat is hired by Slade to fight in the ring for entertainment. Sabina objects at first because she doesn't want him getting hurt. One good thing comes out of it though...he falls in love with Valva a Vain Demon.

Most of the attempted murders on Sabina are recorded in the volume of The Mage in Black by Jaye Wells
